Contradictions Found Within The Book Of Mormon

  • Introduction:
-The purpose of this article is to give specific examples of internal contradictions among the three inspired religious texts that are unique to Mormonism. These texts are the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. In other words, the official sources of Mormon doctrine contradict each other repeatedly. Although this list of internal inconsistencies in Mormon  revelation is by no means exhaustive, it should be more than sufficient to inform those who are unwary of the pernicious doctrine taught within Mormon theology.
  • While the Book of Mormon has passages teaching strict monotheism (Mosiah 15:1-5; Alma 11:28; 2 Nephi 31:21; Mormon 7:7), other inspired Mormon writings affirm the existence of many gods (Doctrine and Covenants: Section 121:32; 132:18-20, 37).
  • While the Book of Mormon has passages teaching that God cannot lie (Ether 3:12; 2 Nephi 9:34), God commands lying in the Pearl of Great Price (Book of Abraham 2:22-25).
  • While the Book of Mormon affirms that God's words are unchangeable (Alma 41:8), the Doctrine of Covenants teaches that God's words can change (Section 56:4-5).
  • While the Book of Mormon contains passages describing the Trinity as being one God (Alma 11:44; Mosiah 15:5; 2 Nephi 31:21), Mormon doctrine actually teaches that the three members of the Trinity are three separate Gods (James Talmage, Articles of Faith, p. 35. 1985).
  • While the Book of Mormon contains passages teaching that God has an unchangeable nature (Mormon 9:9,19; Moroni 8:18; Alma 41:8; 3 Nephi 24:6), official Mormon doctrine teaches that God is increasing in knowledge (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 120.).
  • While the Book of Mormon contains passages teaching the forgiveness for murder (3 Nephi 30:2), other inspired Mormon religious texts teach that murder cannot be forgiven (Doctrine and Covenants Section 42:18).
  • While the Book of Mormon has passages condemning polygamy (Jacob 1:15; 2:23, 24, 27, 31; 3:5; Mosiah 11:2), the Doctrine and Covenants commands the practice of polygamy (Section 132:1, 37-39, 61).
  • While the Book of Mormon contains passages teaches that God dwells in the heart (Alma 34:36), the Doctrine and Covenants contains passages denying that God dwells in the heart (Section 130:3).
  • While there are passages in the Book of Mormon teaching that hell is eternal (Jacob 3:11; 6:10; 2 Nephi 19:16; 28:21-23), Mormon doctrine teaches that hell is not eternal (James Talmage, Articles of Faith, p. 55).
  • While the Book of Mormon contains passages denying the pre-existence of man (Jacob 4:9; Alma 18:28, 34-36), the Doctrine and Covenants teaches the pre-existence of man (Section 93:23, 29-33 P.G.P.; Book of Abraham 3:18, 21-23).

  1. This list only touches the surface. Here's an article I wrote showing contradictions between the BOM, D&C, and the Bible.
